Beautiful Fall Vistas
Peak Leaf season came a little later this year, but that didn't keep the leaf peepers from taking a weekend drive up to the North Georgia mountains. The weather was very nice and warm-at normal elevation. It was quite chilly atop the highest point in Georgia, called Brasstown Bald, standing at 4,700 feet. After a quick 1/2 mile hike to the top, a tower allows a 360 degree view, that lets you see practically all of Georgia and some of North Carolina.
Brasstown Bald is an important piece of Forest Conservation history. A young man, named Arthur Woody, advocated the protection of forests that were being destroyed by loggers and miners. The conservation of the Appalachian Trail can be attributed to Arthur Woody and his friends. The trees were perfect color and they will be for about two more days. The hiking trails, however, are open year round. When the air is cool and all the leaves are gone, the sky opens up to offer another amazing vista.
